HOMEPAGE
From September 1979 until January 2017, I divided my time between the City of Glasgow and my native Isle of Lewis. Moving back to Lewis was a long established goal and has opened new and exciting opportunities.

My visual stimulation and inspiration is generated by my surroundings. The main influence on my work is my response to my environment. I draw and paint in an expressive and representorial way, directly from life, out on location "en plain air". I use a variety of materials, often in a single work, currently using waterbased paint and inks on paper. Though I still love oil on canvas.

I genuinely believe that a strong ability in drawing is the basis of any good visual art. I "get to know" a scene beginning with detailed pencil or ink drawings. Followed by quite spontaneous watercolours or monoprints, to capture the essence of a view, be it a shimmering reflection on a calm sea or the variations in rhythm and colour of a terrace or tenement facade. Finally bold, expressive paintings develop.

Whatever the location, I am happiest drawing and painting outwith the studio where rapid visual judgements and direct responses produce the spontaneous work.
